
Environmental sanitation
The Panchayat under Paravur Taluk are highly concerned about environmental sanitation. Environmental sanitation in Paravur Taluk include human excreta control, managing solid waste and waste water and pest and vector control. The Panchayat have proper solid waste collection and disposal systems. Pest and vector control is handled by local health departments.
Environmental Sanitation Programmes – Kerala Suchitwa Mission
Suchitwa Mission is the technical support group in waste management sector under the Local Self-Government Department, Govt. of Kerala. It is responsible for providing technical and managerial support to the local self-governments of state. Also responsible for conceptualizing, action planning, conducting creative workshops, organising training programmes, initiating sector related studies, bringing of occasional papers, initiating action research, conducting monitoring and such other activities in waste management sector.
Haritha Kerala Mission
The action plan for Hygienic -Waste Management aims to create a clean and green Kerala with the wholehearted participation of socially conscious responsible citizens. This Mission envisions to showcase a Kerala model in the realm of permanent hygienic waste management in an eco-friendly manner in a people-centric mode so as to enable Zero Waste State. It is high time to protect our fragile ecosystem, especially in the backdrop of the havoc we cast upon our environment. Environmental sustainability is framed with a bio centric approach which places humans within the greater context of their natural environment. Under this circumstance, waste management systems are formulated in an eco-friendly manner to extricate ourselves from the wrath of Nature by way of epidemics and other such health hazards. Concept of the 4 R’s is to reduce, recycle, recover and reuse will be borne in mind while executing the projects for waste disposal so as to attain the goal of Zero Waste.
Objectives
- To create awareness in the minds of every responsible citizen that waste disposal is our duty, especially in the wake of urban solid waste management rules which are in force.
- To create a positive mind-set among the citizens for adopting a responsible waste management system thus creating a new civic society conscious about hygienic waste management.
- To aid the local self-governing bodies in finding out solutions for the complexities and problems involved in waste management.
- Make permanent and scientific solutions for waste management in the local bodies.
Activities
- The domestic and institutional bio waste shall be disposed of at the source itself under their own responsibility (Decentralized bio waste disposal at source). If it is not possible, community-level composting bio-methanation methods shall be adopted with the participation of the neighbourhood groups (Ayal Koottam), Wards, Local bodies’ level.
- Non-degradable waste shall be sorted out, cleaned and recycled. The local bodies shall take up initiatives to make this venture a success.
- Appropriate decentralized methods will be adopted at the places identified for processing liquid waste.
- In addition to waste disposal at source, centralized modern waste management systems will also be adopted in the urban cities of Trivandrum, Kochi and Kozhikode.
- The existing method of waste management in each household may be subjected to study. The suitability of bio compost and biogas in all households may also be examined. The appropriate methods of disposal suitable for them shall be explained to the households. They shall be advised to opt for a method suitable for them.
- Necessary waste management arrangements shall be made for disposing the waste on a large scale from places like slaughterhouses, market places, and wedding halls.
- Stringent action shall be taken for throwing garbage in open places and depositing wastes in water bodies.
- The method of waste disposal at source shall be popularized. Domestic waste shall be converted into bio manure using appropriate waste disposal techniques. Gardening, vegetable cultivation, organic farming may be done in each household by using this manure.
- Pertinent waste processing units shall be made available at different levels for processing plastic, e-waste, hospital waste and so on.
- The concept of 4 R’s, that is, Reduce, Recycle, Recover and Reuse – in waste disposal management shall be adopted for achieving the goal of Zero Waste.
- Appropriate information and knowledge disseminating campaigns shall be conducted by enabling the citizen to form positive mind-sets among the citizens towards waste management and to adopt the best practices. A new culture for safe and hygienic waste management systems shall be evolved in society.
